What does an Advanced Clinical Nurse Practitioner do?

Advanced Clinical Nurse Practitioners, also known as ACNPs or ANPs, are highly skilled registered nurses who have undergone additional medical training and acquired qualifications to deliver advanced nursing care and prescribe medication. They play a vital role in bolstering primary care services, enhancing patient satisfaction, and easing the workload on General Practitioners (GPs). Unlike practice nurses, ACNPs possess a wide-ranging scope of practice, often specializing in specific areas, and have the authority to prescribe medication for conditions within their expertise.

Which issues can be addressed by ACNPs?

Similar to GPs, ACNPs can assist with various minor medical concerns and chronic conditions. They are trained and certified to assess, diagnose, treat patients, and issue prescriptions when necessary. They can arrange essential tests, make referrals to hospital physicians, and manage a variety of health issues such as acute chest infections, asthma, conjunctivitis, diarrhoea, dizziness, earache, raised temperature, rashes, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, and more. By offering their expertise, ACNPs provide accessible healthcare, reducing wait times for GP appointments.

How can you access the services of an ACNP?

Advanced Clinical Nurse Practitioners are available at all practices within our Primary Care Network (PCN). When a patient’s case is deemed suitable for their expertise, the practice will schedule an appointment accordingly.
